This article will answer some common questions about domain names, including registering, transferring, and adding privacy to domains.
[edit] Registering a Domain
When you order web hosting service from OCS Solutions, you can get a free domain name if you pay 1 year of web hosting up front. Otherwise, the charge for a domain name is $9.20 per year.
When you order a domain name from us, the domain is put in your name but we manage the registration for you. If you wish to handle the registration yourself, you can go to our domain name website and register it yourself, but you will be responsible for keeping it registered and changing nameservers, etc. In addition, you will not receive the domain for free if you use this method.
[edit] Making Modifications to Your Domain Registration
If you registered your domain through us, you will need to contact support to make changes to your domain, such as ownership changes, nameservers, etc.
If you registered your domain name directly, you can login to the domain control panel to make changes.
[edit] Transferring a Domain
If you wish to transfer a domain to us, the cost is $9.20, the same as a registration. If you pay for a year of hosting up front, you get a free transfer or registration.
A transfer takes roughly 3-5 business days. The requirements for a domain transfer are:
- Your domain must be unlocked at the current registrar
- Your domain must not have been registered or renewed within the last 30 days to be eligible for transfer.
- Your domain must be public. If you have privacy attached it must be removed before a transfer will be successful.
- Your email contact for that domain must be one that you will receive in order for you to be able to forward the approval email you will receive to us to complete the transfer for you.
It is not necessary to transfer your domain to our registration service to host with us, but many of our customers do to save money over higher registration costs frequently found elsewhere.
[edit] Renewing a Domain
If your domain name is registered through us and we handle your registration, you will receive a notice about 30 days before your domain is to expire from us asking if you want to renew the domain. We will not renew the domain unless you click the link in the e-mail, so please respond to it promptly. Renewals cost $9.20, but you get one domain name for free if you are paying your web hosting yearly.
If you fail to renew the domain before it expires, your site will be inaccessible. If you wait too long after it expires to renew it, you may either have to pay a redemption fee of $80.00 (this is charged by our registrar) or loose the domain, so it is imperative that you reply to us as soon as possible if you wish to keep your domain.
