This guide will show you how to setup Thunderbird for both IMAP and POP3 access. For more information about the differences between IMAP and POP3, check out our IMAP vs POP3 article.

To begin, launch Mozilla Thunderbird using the icon shown below. If you do not have Thunderbird, you will need to download it at http://www.getthunderbird.com/.

Once you're in Thunderbird, click on the Tools menu (or the Edit menu on some versions) and select Account Settings. You will then be presented with a wizard, as shown below:

Make sure "E-mail Account" is selected and click Next. You'll then be asked for your name and e-mail address. Enter your name as you'd like it to appear in the From portion of your e-mails, then enter your e-mail address that you are setting up and click Next to continue. You'll then be presented with this dialog:

You now have to choose between a POP3 or IMAP account. We recommend you choose POP3 if you are only going to be using this computer that you set this account up on and no other, or you have a dial-up connection. If you are going to be on multiple computers, we recommend choosing IMAP.

For the incoming mail server, put mail.yourdomain.com, where yourdomain.com is your domain name. For example, if your domain was abcnet.com, you would put mail.abcnet.com.

If you choose POP3, you will need to select Global Folders if you want all of your e-mail addresses to go into the same Inbox. Uncheck this if you don't. If you only have one mail address, we recommend leaving it checked. Click Next when you're ready to proceed.

On the next screen, you'll be asked for your incoming username. Enter your full e-mail address hosted with us in this field and click Next.

You will then be asked for an account name. We recommend leaving it set to your e-mail address, which will likely be the default. If at any point along the way you are asked for an SMTP (outgoing mail) server, use your ISP's SMTP server. If you're not sure of this, your ISP will have this address for you.

Once you click Finished, you're done. You can then adjust other settings if you like on the account before clicking OK to return to Thunderbird's main interface.
